coldove.gif (2093 bytes)col.gif (3064 bytes) has been designing and producing fork blades and steering columns for forks since 1930, the year in which the parent company, AL Columbo, started production of tubes for cycle frames. This background gave rise to the production of the first fork blades of elliptical section and the first multibutted fork blades, using Columbus' exclusive 'Reciprocating Rolling Process'.

Today, with the demand for ever greater lightness, Columbus have replied with the CARVE,  MUSCLE and SUPER MUSCLE, three Columbus forks which in carbon fibre, capitalize on Columbus' years of experience of fork design.

Carbon fibre as a material is 4 times more resistant than steel and 8 times more resistant than aluminium. Its versatility and directionality allows Columbus designers to modulate the section and form of the fork blades to satisfy all design criteria, without compromise or limitation. The Columbus composite fork blades have been realized by overlapping 15 layers of T-700 aerospace carbon fibre and then covering this externally with a layer of High Modulus Carbon fibre, which is 20% lighter and 10% more resistant than T-700. Additionally the full carbon fork, MUSCLE, also includes a special reticular fabric in titanium called 'Ti Mesh titanium net'. This has a considerable damping effect on high frequency vibrations within the fork, such as those produced by irregular ground surfaces. Super Muscle includes Kevlar and Nickel for improved weight saving while maintaining strength and shock resistance.

Columbus Minimal Fork 1" or 1 1/8" non integrated

This new monocoque fork from Columbus is called Minimal, with its essential and sober line, it has been developed for traditional head sets,
particularly for steel frames, as their essential lines don’t so well complement integrated forks.  The progressive curve of the fork blades dampens
vibrations and guarantees great handling stability including in extreme conditions.

Characteristics:

  • Carbon monocoque fork

  • Composition: unidirectional T700 Carbon Fibrer

  • Carbon steering column Ø 25.4 L=300 mm or 28.6 L=300mm non integrated

  • Forged dropouts in AL 6061 T6

  • Rake: 45mm (for 1") or 50mm for (for 1 1/8")

  • MEETS THE NEW EUROPEAN SAFETY STANDARD: EN 14781

Columbus TUSK Cross

The Columbus Tusk Cross fork has been especially design for Cyclocross Bicycles.
The 45mm diameter fork head is forged in aluminium 6061 T6, with a 1 1/8" steering column in 7075 T6 aluminium reinforced with variable thickness. The oversize fork blades are made in multilayered unidirectional carbon fibre and are integrated with a CNC aluminium reinforcement on the brake pivot. The oversize blade section makes the Tusk cross a strong and reliable fork suitable for competition (and in accordance with the new European EN 14781 and EN 14784 standards)

Characteristics:

  • Carbon fibre fork blades with variable section
  • Forged 6061 T6 alloy head
  • Fork blades aluminium internal reinforcement for V brake pivot
  • Reinfoced steerer with aluminium thickness. Aluminium 7075 T6, 28.6mm, L=300mm
  • Forged fork ends in 6061 alloy
  • Rake 45mm
  • Weight 740 g average

CARVE

This is a raked fork with an aerodynamic profile, designed for races: both time trial and triathlon. The aero shape of the fork blades has been designed to increase the efficiency and stability of the bicycle at high speed (> 30 mph). The side strength of the fork, thanks to the use of High Modulus Carbon Fibre, has been maximised and this allows for both high precision trajectories on bends and a great overall feel.

Characteristics:

  • New Monocoque Single Piece Design
  • Composition: T700 aerospace carbon fibre and High Modulus carbon fibre
  • Steering Column 28.6x300mm in Carbon Ahead. Integrated head tube.
  • Carbon fork blades with aerodynamic profile
  • Forged fork ends in 6061 alloy with aerodynamic profile

GAP CAP:

The clearance recovery system of the steerer has been made especially to be able to adapt to the internal diameter of the fork column. The length was designed to be able to involve the entire closure area of the handlebar stem. Thanks to a series of expanders, the hold is greater and better distributed along the internal surface of the column.

Characteristics:

• in CNC-processed aluminum alloy

TESTS

Columbus carbon forks are produced in accordance with ISO 9000. All forks are marked and their history can be traced. The tests include destruction testing and are performed on finished product samples. They are very severe:

cforktest.jpg (25828 bytes)

  • Frontal and side strength test:
A load of 200 N is first applied to the frontal part and then to the side part of the fork. The flex is measured on each occasion and this must not exceed a set value.
  • Shock Test:
A mass of 250 N is dropped from a height of 430mm on a properly restrained fork. In order to pass the test the fork must resist without breakage or residual deformation.
  • Static Test:
A load of 200 N is applied to the frontal part for 1 minute. In order to pass the test the fork must resist without breakage or deformation.
  • Fatigue Test:
During this test an alternate force of +-600 N is applied. In order to pass this test the fork must resist for 150,000 cycles without breaking.
